SUMMIT

Education has long served as a means for intentional development to prepare us for our dreams. At Agnes Scott College, I have had the distinct honor of participating in SUMMIT. From my first days on campus, I engaged a foundational leadership experience entitled Legacy: The Goizueta Foundation Leadership Immersion. During that time I established my strengths as a deliberate, achieving, input, learner, and analytical.

“SUMMIT reinvents a liberal arts education for the 21st century by preparing every student to be an effective change agent in a global society. Guided by a personal board of advisors, every student, regardless of major, designs an individualized course of study and co-curricular experiences that develop leadership abilities and understanding of complex global dynamics. Equipped with a rigorous liberal arts and sciences education, an understanding of complex global issues and the ability to lead strategically and honorably, Agnes Scott graduates are ready to scale the next SUMMIT.” -Agnes Scott College

During my first year, I took classes on the impact of food and its relationship to globalization and culture, how biases in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) fields affects marginalized folks, mindful leadership, and scientific endeavors and human rights in the sub-arctic.

As I dove into my major my second year, I explored contemporary feminist theory, intersectional research methodologies, and contemporary feminist literature in order to facilitate classroom discussions and in-depth focus groups.

Now, in my third and final year at Agnes Scott, I am considering environmental ethics alongside ethics of care so that I may develop a deeper understanding of how we educate others to advocate and uplift decolonizing, anti-racists, trans-inclusive, and intergenerational work.

Over my time at Agnes Scott College I have worked toward the following specific learning outcomes through SUMMIT and my major which can be found by the following tags:

Strengths:

Deliberative: a trait encapsulating the serious nature taken towards decisions while trying to predict future outcomes. In the ever-evolving world, time seems to fall off it’s set course and skip ahead resulting in stress in tension within our daily lives. Intentionally, I have set to resolve the maze of daily obstacles through sitting down and putting pen to paper. Through my major, I have come to understand the power of self-reflection as an intellectual and academic pursuit that informs my own biases and understandings of the world.

Achiever: a trait of ethic and hard work that is fueled by productivity and being busy. As a multi-sport athlete, faith group leader, executive board member of Mortar Board, and intern it is easy to see my love of intentionally using my time. This strength serves as my inner motivation to ensure I always have an end goal in mind. Through managing multiple student organizations and working I have pushed myself to exemplify this trait.

Input: a trait of those who hold an overwhelming desire to collect items such as but not limited to facts, opinions, friendships, objects, etc. The world is an infinite variety and complex being which I have come to understand every slightly more through my interdisciplinary scholarship. From taking courses in biology to film studies to Spanish, I have developed a foundation of knowledge that informs how I approach research today.

Learner: a trait of those drawn to the process of learning. Thriving in dynamic work environments, I excel in short term assignments when expected to learn about a new subject in a short period. I am less concerned with being a subject matter expert, but I am deeply invested in my own personal growth and development through processes.

Analytical: a trait of those who seek to understand patterns in connections. It only seemed natural as an analytical person to be drawn to the major of Women’s Studies. Unpacking how systems of power impact the identities of our communities is at the heart of my studies. By engaging in decolonial studies, critical race theory, and queer theory I have utilized my analytical skills throughout my academic journey.
