The Search For A Summary http://lydiamathis.agnesscott.org/the-search-for-other-worlds/the-search-for-a-summary/ http://lydiamathis.agnesscott.org/the-search-for-other-worlds/the-search-for-a-summary/#respond Thu, 17 Sep 2015 16:32:01 +0000 http://lydiamathis.agnesscott.org/?p=15 The Search for Other Worlds is course that serves as an introduction to the history (and future) of other worlds. We explore facts and fiction, and often times fiction that morphs into fact. Through discussions, novels, films, and other resources, the class is learning about other worlds and the humans who have been tracking this journey throughout time. It is a fascinating course in that it shows, since the beginning of time, how our eyes have always been searching out the heavens. Through humans research of other worlds, we are also researching ourselves. Astronomers have to ask what brings life to a planet, so, they inherently have to ask what brought living creatures to Earth. If we wanted to know what life outside of Earth would be made of, then we’d have to know what makes up life on Earth. The Search for Other Worlds allows the class to learn about the universe and ourselves. One thing I have learned so far is that comparing humans and Earth to other planets and the life that could exist on them, has allowed humans to look closely at themselves so we can try to make these aforementioned comparisons, and we have found a common ground on which all humans stand. The actual search for other worlds has brought humans from around the globe and throughout time closer together. Professor Depree showed the class an image of a sunset on Mars, which reminded me of a picture of a sunset I took (pictured). When I saw this picture I realized that, though we are all very different from one another, we all see the same sun. This shared perspective reminded me of the purpose of LDR and GBL; to enhance our global lense and be able to go about the world with this perspective. What better way to be a global person than to share the same perspective with everyone on Earth, at least when it comes to the Sun.
