The courses I take as an English Literature major are intended to have certain learning outcomes, which are called Major Learning Outcomes (MLO’s). The MLO’s for the English Department can be found in the Agnes Scott College Academic Catalog, and I will also list those outcomes here.

The Agnes Scott College English Department believes that a student who graduates from Agnes Scott with an English major should be able to:

  1. demonstrate knowledge and understanding of major and significant texts and traditions of literatures written in English;
  2. analyze literary works and movements demonstrating knowledge of style, language, conventions, and historical, social, and cultural context;
  3. evaluate works of literary criticism and theory and employ them in the analysis of literature;
  4. construct thoughtful, well-researched, and original interpretations and arguments about literature and its contexts in written and oral forms;
  5. apply understanding and knowledge gained from the study of literature to other disciplines, problems, and contexts.

Throughout this portfolio, I have written reflections that exemplify my achievement of these learning outcomes.

In my reflection “Writing Haiku’s In Northern Ireland,” I discuss how I studied major works of literature in my course on Northern Ireland, which is an example of my achievement of MLO 1. I also discuss how the learning of works of literature informed the short-form writing pieces we would be asked to write while traveling in Northern Ireland, which is an example of my achievement of MLO 5.
