Problem Solving Skills
As a Spanish tutor, I sometimes have to teach new concepts to students. One time a student came to me for help, after failing to understand a concept during her class lecture. I tried to explain the examples in her textbook regarding conjugation. However, the student was not comprehending even after explaining to her the concept. Then, I realized that maybe she did was not understanding because she might be a visual learner. Hence, I decided to write out examples and steps, and draw pictures of what a word symbolized with different conjugations. As a result, the student was able to practice examples on her own and understand how to conjugate specific words. From this instance, I learned that not everyone learns the same way.
Adaptability Skills
In conditions where I have to adjust to new and different situations, I do so successfully. For example, when I moved from Chicago to Georgia, to attend college, I was able to adjust being away from family and manage the school workload. As a result, I was able to spend more time completing work and exploring Georgia.
Leadership Skills
During my second year of college, I co-founded and co-wrote an organization on campus called Freedom at Agnes. The duties required to start the organization included recruiting a full-time faculty/staff member as the organization advisor, finding a minimum of 10 full-time students (4 Executive Board Members included), writing an organization constitution, and arguing to the Student Government Association why this organization was needed at Agnes Scott College. After having the organization approved, I deligated weekly meetings and events. In all, because of this organization, students now have a place on campus to be empowered and safe regarding their immigration status.
