Georgia Undergraduate Research in Psychology Conference Presentation

This research illustrates relationships between cognitive empathy/racial diversity of one’s friends and campus climate as well as establishing relationships between campus climate and student satisfaction among college students. I decided to look into these topics because I was concerned with knowing if there was a correlation between the rate of one’s empathy and how racially diverse their friend groups are. I was then interested in knowing how those factors impact campus climate and overall student satisfaction. During this research, I was tasked with going through an already existing database (that my professor was collecting for her own research) and come up with variables to analyze and hopefully conclude with significant findings.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                            The findings suggested that the way students perceived their campus predicted how satisfied they will feel at their institution. This research can be applied to understand what impacts a campus climate, how to properly discuss any disagreements students might experience that impacts their attitudes, and how to improve upon those facets of the campus. This research helped me in understanding how different groups interact with each other based solely on the numbered reported in the database. I later applied to GURP (Georgia Undergraduate Research in Psychology Conference) and was able to present my research among others who attended. This was the first time I had presented research outside of the Agnes Scott Community and it came with its challenges but also allowed me the chance to get out of my comfort zone and grow in regard to my presentation skills.
