Journeys Trip to Jamaica

During my SUMMIT journeys trip, we learned a lot about the history of Jamaica, the enslavement of people, and how the sugar plantations had an effect on not only the economy of Jamaica but how they still impact the people who work in them today.  We also spent a day in a Maroon community, Accompong, exploring the history and customs of the village. Experiencing the culture in Jamaica related to themes we learned in class. Some of those experiences included music, dance performances, food, lifestyle, and discussions with local citizens.   Race, slavery, imperialism, globalization, and identity were some themes we learned. When put in context with visiting Petersfield, the biggest take away I noticed was how the residing citizens we interviewed held onto the past. This connection showed through their sense of identity and community. Additionally, I was encouraged to ask probing questions regarding the marginalization of other cultures. This trip ultimately taught me how we are all tied to our past histories and how those same histories affect what we do in the present.
